Few places have had a history as stormy as that of Veracruz, Mexico. This is where conquistador Hernán Cortez landed in 1519 and established the first Spanish city in the New World, and Europeans have flowed into Veracruz ever since. The European presence has contributed its flavor to the stunning colonial architecture and the vibrant cafe culture, with its world-class music and food.
Today, the state of Veracruz is one of Mexico's best-kept secrets. The landscape ranges from a six-hundred-mile tropical coastline to rugged mountains and snow-capped volcanoes; there are archaeological sites that date back 5,000 years and cities as modern and sophisticated as any in the world. The wonderful climate and rich soil support an amazing variety of herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables, all combining to create a cuisine a lot like the people themselves: subtle and spicy, exotic and welcoming.
